Muslim Life in a Secular Society

What does it mean to build a strong Muslim family and community while living as a small minority in a modern, secular society?
Denmark is one of the world’s most prosperous, stable and secular societies. Muslims make up only around 5% of the population and form a relatively recent, diverse and scattered minority, navigating both the opportunities of Danish society and significant political and social challenges.
Drawing inspiration from the society of Madinah and mature Muslim communities such as those of the Malay world, this event explores how Muslims can develop a confident sense of citizenship and belonging while remaining grounded in their Islamic identity. How can we strengthen family and community life, remain sincere to our faith, and hold firmly to the rope of Allah in an age of distraction, misinformation and deception?
The talk will be given by Syed Muḥammad Muḥiyuddīn Al-ʿAṭṭās, Lecturer at Sultan Ibrahim Islamic University College in Johor, Malaysia. His work focuses on the Malay-Islamic intellectual tradition, Islamic philosophy and worldview, ethics and spirituality. He studied at CASIS and spent four years in Tarim, Hadramawt, pursuing traditional Islamic learning with scholars of the Ba‘alawi tradition.
